Bill Rotsler, fan cartoonist extraordinaire, died of cancer in October 1997. The prodigiousness of his output can be appreciated by noting that there are still Rotsler cartoons being published for the first time these days, and there are rumored to be still cabinets full of unpublished ones.
Rudyard Kipling was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The presentation speech praises Barrack Room Ballads for its "magnificent soldier-songs brimming over with virile humour", The Seven Seas because "Kipling reveals himself as an imperialist, a citizen of a world-wide empire", and The Jungle Book for being popular with kids.
The Berber governor of the Mahgreb, Hammad ibn Buluggin, founded Qal'at Banu Hammad (City of Hammad) in the Ma'adid mountains south of what would later be Algiers. In 1015, this would become the capital of his dynasty, the Hammadids, who ruled an area covering the eastern and central areas of modern Algeria. The mosque and palaces were some of the greatest Islamic architecture in Africa, but they would be largely destroyed in 1152, when the Hammadids were overrun by the Almohads.
